Hopping numbers (The +1 and -1 mat )

Domain: understanding of numbers, addition and subtraction, multiplication tables
Objective: practicing arithmetic skills by means of combination: thinking (number work) and acting (hoping). Integration of motion development.
Activity: in groups of 2 children – ideal for working in groups, - can be used without help from an adult, - clear differentiation possibilities, - stimulates interaction between children
Contents: 1 plastic mat in a cardboard case ( 120 X 80 cm)


The +1 and -1 mat
The children start at number 1 at the edge of the mat and always hop onto +1. They phrase (1+1=2, 2+1=3 etc.) or they start at number 8 at the edge of the mat and always hop onto -1. The express the sum (8-1=7, 7-1=6 etc.)
The same goes for +2, -2 etc.
